‘Prepping’ and Beyond COVID-19: The Opportunities14 Apr 2020
We are collectively facing the biggest shake-up our industry has seen and are propelled to look for new ways to work, and to virtually ‘raft up’ together and support each other.
As horrible as the situation is for so many businesses and families, it also just might be exactly what we need. And I am really excited about where the industry will be when we come out of the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. The prospect of both suppliers and clients viewing more collections virtually and being more aware of the impact of flying regularly to so many countries to see our collections.
Change = Opportunity
The rag trade is in the biggest shift we’ve encountered since we moved off presenting painted collections to digital collections. The print industry has traditionally been built on travelling the globe; indeed I started the company because I loved to travel and for the joy of creative exchange.
So in a time where travel is not possible, it's exciting because we're being pushed to present our collections virtually. We have been trialling private YouTube channels, apps like Hyperlapse, virtual meetings with Zoom webinars, online magazines, and through customer feedback, refining how they want to see our print collections.
Because when we come out of this, there still will be fashion. There will still be people buying. However, I hope to see that we come out of this smarter, learning from where the industry was and how to create impactful changes for us all.
Jumping on planes might be the expectation to present collections today but a lot of what we can do can be delivered virtually, and people can make decisions on the spot, through amazing technology.
One of the tangible elements our customers may find hard is not being able to feel the fabric, our industry is based on belief in the necessity of touch and feel and that's normal in a time of major change; and we’ll learn to adapt to those changes and work through a new medium to look at our print designs.
Beyond the Virus
We are all unsure of how the industry will look out of this pandemic, and where everyone will be in six months. I hope that businesses, including ourselves, come out of it smarter and more adaptable.
I think we can all say we're missing the hugs from the people we used to hug. We're missing the security of going to trade shows and seeing colleagues and socially catching up with friends we’ve made in the industry over the decades.
So many people in our communities are susceptible to COVID-19, our loved ones, it's up to us to look out for them and be responsible.
